Painfully gorgeous, shot on 16mm, and it would be right at home in a best-of '70s horror retrospective, except it's from 2022. I do not say this lightly- this is one of my favorite movies this year. Wednesday attempts to master her emerging psychic ability, thwart a monstrous killing spree that has terrorized the local town, and solve the supernatural mystery that embroiled her parents 25 years ago - all while navigating her new and very tangled relationships at Nevermore. The series is a sleuthing, supernaturally infused mystery charting Wednesday Addams’ years as a student at Nevermore Academy. And Jenna Ortega is perfection as our favorite stone-faced, monochromatic teen. And yes, Burton directed the first four episodes, sharing directing duties for the second half, but as a cohesive whole, this has the Burton vibe we've been longing for.
